The shoulder joint allows an amazing amount of movement, at the sacrifice of stability. A complex firing of many muscles holds the shoulder in place while moving throughout the wide range of motion, leaving the shoulder vulnerable to many injuries. Many people will describe difficulty with reaching overhead or behind their back, or an inability to move their shoulder beyond a certain range due to pain or tightness. Shoulder pain may be due to injury to any of the supporting tissues, instability, or it can be referred pain from the neck. Shoulder problems and injuries often stem from poor posture, or lack of stability due to muscle imbalances or weakness. Treatment will often focus on correcting posture, biomechanics, and muscular imbalances as well as decreasing pain and inflammation.
